Isn’t that the MOST adorable face you’ve ever seen??!!
This is Little Ma (aka Little Girl) in case you haven’t been introduced. If you haven’t, you are really missing out ! She is the cutest, sweetest, most adorable Shih Tzu ever. She is very unique in that she has double dew claws on her back feet !! She is also very unique in that she has a very unique medical situation.
I’ll try to keep it brief as her medical history with Marden’s Ark Dog Tales goes back to May 2024. Little Girl was found as a stray, severely matted. Feces and urine had been impacted in her fur on her hind end. So much so that bacteria got hold and damaged much of her flesh back there. Her sphincter, some of her rectum, anal glands, and flesh were destroyed. We attended to her flesh and the skin actually grew back and fur actually grew back too ! However, she continued to heal so that her pooper grew so small that she had trouble pooping. The poop would back up in her colon so that her colon stretched and she would back up and her colon would “pooch” (herniate) out. She would strain and strain and not be able to get enough poop out daily. She had several procedures, and surgeries, and a lot of help by a wonderful vet. Her pooper got stretched out big enough so that she could get poop out. However, it would still back up in her discombobulated, and stretched out colon. We’ve tried many things with little avail to help with the discomfort and pain that she is in.
Today we were fortunate enough to have a consultation at the NC State Vet School to see if they had any other solutions for Little Girl. They do !!! They suggested a surgery where they will remove ST muscles from her legs and relocate them around her pooper. This will add some muscle that was lost and help prevent the colon from “pooching” out (or herniating). Then they will either do a rectal “riffling” or remove some fascia to form a “speed bump”. Since she has no sphincter or shut off valve, this will help poop from flying out when she jumps around or shakes. We are hopeful (prayers, fingers crossed, and positive vibes) that once the surgery is completed, and she has healed enough, her colon will act more normally, we can cut back on the laxatives so she can have some more normal consistency poops. With more normal consistency poops she will be much more comfortable, have less pain, and be able to lead more of a normal pup life like she so deserves !
This specialty surgery is going to cost $6K-$8K. I know that sounds like a lot but if you every met Little Girl, with all her toes, you’d know she is worth it ! She is less than 3 years old and so deserves a chance for a comfortable, pain-free life.

If some of you are able to donate more, that will help cover the appointment today and any costs greater than $6K. The vet doing the surgery is only there this week so we need to act now !
